Caduceus Coat
Personal Project
I made this coat based off of two characters from Critical Role — Mollymauk Tealeaf and Caduceus Clay. I made it with the cut of Mollymauk’s coat — his most iconic costuem item — and with the motifs and color scheme of Caduceus.
I used a lot of techniques on this coat including fabric painting, stenciling, beading, embroidery, applique, and patchwork.

I sketched up as a basic idea for the design on Paint Tool SAI. I didn't stick to this exactly, allowing the materials I had to guide how I ended up decorating it.

I made a stencil of the basic tree outline with paper, so I could pick out and lay down the correct brown fabric in the right spots. A benefit of this not being a very fitted pattern is that I can lay the full skirt out flat like this to pattern on top.

I appliqued the tree on top, and textured that, then stitched on several fake flowers all over.

The coat has a full skirt, double sleeves, and a massive hood.

I made the dragonfly sleeves with lace, then embroidered and beaded the pieces. I used ribbon to edge it and keep it from fraying.

I painted pink spirals on the sleeve, and edged the sleeve in piping.

I painted the edge with fabric paints to make a forest floor, then used various stencils -- homemade and bought -- to make mushrooms and ferns.
